Not for child's play, here's an exotic piece by M.C. Escher, done in 1957. Also called Plane Filling II, this woodcut stamping (carved by his own hand) is an example of Escher's fascination with tessellation, a technique (borrowed from geometry) of covering the canvas (the plane) with forms abutting other forms in contiguous fashion until every bit of space is filled: forms and shapes intertwined such that you see one solid mass rather than a group of individual shapes. The themes and designs in this print reflect the artist's exposure to and interest in Islamic and Moorish art motifs. |
