This would be a nice, normal still life of a few mundane items on a desk - but with fire-breathing reptilians emerging into three-dimensional figures by pealing themselves from a flat sheet of paper, making their way round the desk only to step (reptilian fashion) back down onto the paper and become a drawing once again, it is anything but normal. M.C. Escher has again sketched an imagination-capturing scene that juxtaposes reality with impossibility. As with the other sketches that this famous engraver has created, it is impossible to glance briefly at the picture and move on. You can't resist looking long and hard at each part of the sketch to see where reality and impossibility collide. |
