All stairways go up as well as down, right? Not necessarily. M.C. Escher (1898-1972) has presented us with a visual conundrum: a single file of men going upstairs on the outside rail and another single file of men going downstairs on the inside rail, but they all remain on the same floor level - neither ending their trip one floor up nor one floor down! As in the other sketches of this famous engraver, the artist has used geometry to trick our eyes into seeing an impossible activity. Note the lone observer on the balcony casually watching the activity. This is a feature of many of Escher's sketches. |
