Impressionist painter, Pierre-Auguste Renoir, painted this very romantic couple dancing in a French café in the early 1900s. Renoir concentrated most of his work on figures in real-life settings, rather than landscapes or still lifes. In La Danse, the man, whose face is not revealed, is clearly enchanted by the young lady, who looks demurely away from his searching eyes. We see, though, that she is holding him tightly around the neck, letting him know that his attention is not unwanted. The intimacy of their dance is in stark contrast to the public setting in which it is taking place - but there are no crowds present to these two. They are alone amongst the patrons. This is one of Renoir's most famous paintings because of its power to draw the viewer into the intimate capsule the couple has formed around themselves. |
